Solito
Solito tells the story of Javier Zamora’s journey from his village in El Salvador to the United States when he was nine years old. The route passes through Guatemala and Mexico, with the goal of reuniting with his parents, who had emigrated earlier.
During the trip, Javier leaves behind his grandparents and aunt, with whom he had been living since his mother left four years earlier. He travels accompanied by a group of strangers and a guide hired to cross the border. The journey, initially planned to last two weeks, extends to about two months.
Along the way, he faces various obstacles and risks associated with migration through Central America and Mexico. The experience changes his relationship with the people traveling with him, who eventually become a temporary support group.
The book presents the autobiographical testimony of that journey and places it in the context of migratory movements from Central America to the United States.
