Mariquita: Una historia autobiográfica sobre la homofobia
From the very beginning, Juanito realizes that he doesn't fit in with the others. At school, they start calling him "mariquita" and he doesn't quite understand what it means. This personal work tells a universal story: that of the marginalized, the different, the bullied.
An autobiographical story about homophobia.
From his childhood to the present day, Juanito Libritos shares his experiences as a homosexual in 1990s Spain. The homophobia he suffered during his school years, the search for identity in adolescence, and his beginnings in adult life as an openly gay man.
Mariquita is an open window into Juanito Libritos' own life, a story of growth and learning in which we see how a child realizes from the very first moment that he doesn't fit in with his family, school, or society.
But it’s not just about the bullying he receives for being gay: it also talks about what Spanish society was like in the 1990s regarding sexual diversity, how culture and books can save our lives, and how an LGBT person begins to discover the community they belong to.
