Every year, around 100,000 women voluntarily and legally terminate their pregnancies in Spain. However, during the four decades of Franco's regime, abortion was illegal and persecuted. Hundreds of thousands of women had to do it in secret using parsley, rue, or sharp objects inserted into their uteruses, risking their health and often losing their lives. In the early years of the Transition, a group of women and men armed with Nescafé cans and bicycle pumps made the safest known method to terminate pregnancy accessible to all Spanish women. Until 1985, the year abortion was decriminalized, their clandestine networks performed more than 15,000 procedures. Despite risking imprisonment, these idealists fought to guarantee reproductive rights and improve women's lives. In this book, Paula Boira Nacher collects the beautiful story of solidarity created by these networks through the voices of their protagonists, while also rescuing the untold memories of women who had abortions during Franco's regime.
