The oppressive laws they were fleeing had left many scars on those women, some more visible than others. But it was Ivy who hid the most behind the pain and resentment toward men caused by the mark that disfigured her face. How could she show her that the world could be a better place? How to break through the barrier of her scar? Would fitting in with the insurgents be enough to achieve the ultimate change that would restore women to their rightful place? The author had had the seed of Ivy’s character in her mind for several years, after starting to read about feminism and realizing how mistaken she had been about what it means, but she couldn’t find a plot that convinced her. It took quite some time before she decided to just sit down and write, connecting all those ideas. With Las insurrectas: cicatrices, she wanted to take a new direction in her style and the usual themes of her novels.
