Helmut Newton. SUMO. 20th Anniversary Edition: Mehrsprachige Ausgabe
Helmut Newton (1920-2004) always showed a healthy disdain for the easy or predictable, so it’s no surprise that the SUMO seemed like an irresistible project to him. The idea of a book the size of a private exhibition with spectacular images printed to artistic quality standards arose from an open and creative dialogue between the photographer and the publisher. With the SUMO weighing over 35 kg, presented inside a box and sealed in shrink wrap, Newton created a milestone that stood out above any other book published before, both in terms of conceptual extravagance and technical features.
Published in an edition of 10,000 signed and numbered copies, the SUMO sold out shortly after its release and quickly multiplied in value. Today it is part of numerous collections worldwide, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York. The legendary number one copy, signed by more than 100 of the personalities featured in the book, broke the record for the most expensive book published in the 20th century: on April 6, 2000, it was auctioned in Berlin for 620,000 German marks, around €317,000.
This XL edition now celebrates 20 years of the SUMO, the result of a project conceived by Helmut Newton years ago. The volume, revised by June Newton, brings together 394 images and a booklet that tells the story of this publishing adventure, a spectacular tribute in a new and more accessible format to the great Helmut Newton.
